The World of Ukrainian Icons

On 18th June 2015, the exhibition halls of building number 4 of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve saw the opening ceremony of the inter-museum exhibition project “The World of Ukrainian Icons”.

The exhibition brings together more than 120 items, including icons and works of decorative and liturgical art from the 10th to the 19th century from the collections of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve, the “Platar: In memory of Serhii Platonov” charitable fund, "Art Invest Group" fund, the Sheremetievs Museum and the “Dukat” antiques salon.

Through this exhibition, the project aims to show the national originality and style of Ukrainian religious iconography, the diversity of artistic expression, the rich range of themes, the regional features of Ukrainian religious iconographic art and the stylistic changes that they have undergone over time.

Although it covers the activities of various art centres, the exhibition stands out with the artworks created in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’s workshops. Artefacts of professional religious iconography are displayed alongside the works works of folk artists, the fact that allows visitors to experience the full range of approaches used to represent traditional Christian themes.

All of these works help create an overall understanding of the evolution of Ukrainian religious iconography over the centuries. A significant number of artworks convey the unique features of one of the most brilliant periods in the history of Ukrainian culture: Ukrainian Baroque.

Moreover, in order to provide visitors with a complete picture of the subject, decorative and liturgical artworks have been also displayed. Crosses, sculptures and metal artefacts combine to convey a sense of the sacral atmosphere that inhabits the church space.

The exhibition is open daily starting 19th June 2015 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at the following address: 9 Lavrska Str., Kyiv City (building number 4 of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve).
